Elon Musk Fires Back at Broadcom CEO Hock Tan's AI Investment Warning: 'No Crying in the Casino' Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk responded to Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) CEO Hock Tan’s warning about speculative artificial intelligence investing, adding to a debate over the sustainability of the AI boom. Tan Warns AI Investors Are Gambling Musk was replying on X to a post summarizing Tan’s remarks at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore on Monday. Tan told the panel that "A lot of investors have no clue what they’re investing in, but set very extreme expectations, only to find out that it’s almost like they are in a casino gambling," according to Reuters. Tan also questioned how efficiently companies are spending on AI. Comparing enterprise experimentation with AI tokens to an arcade, he said, "When you are a kid you go to a video arcade, you play. Your parents give you $10 of tokens, you finish it in 10 minutes and you haven’t learned anything." Musk, responding to a post aggregating Tan’s comment, stated, "No crying in the casino." Broadcom said fiscal third-quarter AI semiconductor revenue jumped 221% year over year to $16.7 billion, while Tan expects fourth-quarter AI semiconductor revenue to reach $21.7 billion. Still, Tan said financing could become a bigger obstacle than chips, memory or electricity. "[What] I think might be the biggest constraint is capital," he said at the Singapore conference. Reuters reported Broadcom has been overcoming wafer and memory shortages even as Tan sees financing becoming the next hurdle. The concern has also put AI returns and capital availability in focus. AI Buildout Raises Wider Spending Concerns Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) CEO Lip-Bu Tan, appearing on the same DBS panel, also highlighted infrastructure strain. Intel said in July that "AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute." Its CEO has previously warned that AI supply constraints could persist. The financial concern is widening. According to research published by the Brookings Institution in September, the U.S. AI infrastructure buildout is projected to reach $10.3 trillion through 2032. This investment is expected to average 3.63% of U.S. GDP annually, surpassing historical economic booms such as railroads and electrification, increasing pressure on companies to generate returns that justify enormous capital spending.
